Detail Description:
San Juan Island has scenic coastlines and abundant wildlife in its waters. The best Orca (killer) whale watching is here and the islands are considered the "jewels" of the pacific north west, located in the Puget Sound. Half the fun is getting there! The ferry is a tour in itself. Friday Harbor is full of interesting shops, restaurant and sights. This tour is a bit challenging and requires a good deal of upper body strength. If you work out at a gym 2-3 times a week or do physical labor for a living or kayak regularly - you'll be fine. Approximately 4.75 hours of the 5 are spent out on the water. You will stop at a beach to enjoy lunch. Your departure location from Roche Harbor, on the north west side of San Juan Island, where the whales travel up and down that coast, is the best in the North West to see Orca whales from your kayak. These are wild animals and come and go strictly based on food/fish, not because they have a set pattern. Knowing that, you can understand there is about a 25% chance that you may see them from your kayak. If a higher percentage or likelihood is what you are after, try the whale watch cruise (from Friday Harbor) where the percentage is 90% or better. Other kayaking companies claim higher percentages in kayaks, but this simply is not possible. It's important to note that whales can swim at 30 mph and a good kayaker might paddle 3 mph! On this tour you will almost always see harbor seals, great blue heron, bald eagles, river otter, at least three wildlife refuges, remote rugged coastline, the Olympic Mountains, Mt Baker, and more. The philosophy is to observe, but not to interfere with Orca behavior. They may be foraging for fish, resting or at play. The resident Orca are a joy to watch and a gift to be respected. You will have a great time whether they choose to swim by or not. This tour is seasonal and only operates from April through to October
